WHY WAS THIS PUBLISHED?

A visiting hack at the Hudson Institute gets not only to publish an article in Slate, he also gets to include this horrific line:
Nonetheless, Paul Wolfowitz, Bush's one-time point man for Middle East democracy, is one among many across the political spectrum who are concerned that by choosing an authoritarian police state for his podium, Obama may be signaling that the United States is ditching democracy promotion.

Let's recall that Wolfowitz didn't include democracy promotion among the 4 reasons he gave for the Iraq War.

PHOTO QUIZ

The top photo is from Pres. Obama's trip to Egypt, the bottom is from his trip to 5 Guys. Looks like a "regular guy," the kind that Chris Matthews and the wingers thought Pres. Fredo was. Unfortunately, Pres. Obama is a Democrat, so War Whore Ingraham was all upset that he wasn't wearing a suit.

NEWT SEZ "WOE IS US"

Newt Gingrich has been hitting the Fundie lecture circuit and that means he's sucking up to them. He recently attended an event in Virginia Beach and pandered thusly:
"I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history," Gingrich said. "We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism."

Doesn't this mean that over 30 years of whining by the Religious Right has been a big FAIL?

IS LOU DOBBS A NEO-CON?

He sounded like one last week when he talked about Israel. First he claimed Israel was "a beacon unto the world." This phrase seems to adapted from the Old Testament:
Isaiah 42:6
Revised Standard version
I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations.

He next repeated a familiar wingnut refrain: Israel is the "only democracy in the Middle East." Here we have another example of a conservative narrative breaking down because conservatives claim as one of the justifications for the Iraq War the bringing of democracy to the Iraq people.

WHERE ARE ALL THE CIVIL LAWSUITS?

We have lots of evidence that people know the Big Shitpile was in fact a Big Shitpile so there should be a tidal wave of lawsuits from people who got burned. Here's a little more evidence (h/t Atrios):
Countrywide exec often warned about mortgage risks
Fri Jun 5, 2009 9:57pm EDT
By Steve Eder

NEW YORK (Reuters) - John P. McMurray made it clear to his Countrywide Financial Corp bosses that they were playing a dangerous game with risk. But they didn't listen. McMurray was chief risk officer of the lender that became a symbol of some of the worst excesses of the subprime mortgage crisis.

Warnings from McMurray are cited often in a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission against Countrywide's co-founder Angelo Mozilo and two lieutenants.

Frequently cited in the lawsuit are emails from McMurray warning Mozilo, Sambol and Sieracki about the rapidly increasing risk of the loan portfolio at Countrywide, which by September 2006 estimated it had almost 16 percent of the U.S. home loan market.

GOD HIMSELF WANTED OBAMA TO WIN

Well, that's according to Sarah Palin...
Palin on defensive as scrutiny rises
Spent $150,000 of RNC money for clothing

Globe Staff / October 23, 2008

As her qualifications, her understanding of the vice presidency, and even her wardrobe came under renewed scrutiny yesterday, Sarah Palin told a high- profile conservative Christian leader that she isn't discouraged by the Republican ticket's sagging poll numbers because she and running mate John McCain have always been underdogs.

"I know at the end of the day, putting this in God's hands, the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4," the GOP vice presidential nominee told James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, in an interview posted yesterday on the group's website.

WHO'S "AROUND THE BEND"?

Assrocket or Newsweek?

GLENN BECK CHANNELS MARK LEVIN

A constant part of Mark Levin's criticisms of liberals and others who he disagrees with involves making fun of their physical appearance. Glenn Beck took the tack in his "comedy" tour:
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Democratic Representative Henry A. Waxman were both made fun of for their looks; Mr. Waxman’s nose was the subject of a particularly unpleasant visual joke.

IRAQ AND TEARS

Pres. Obama correctly described Iraq as a war of choice and Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) said that description was "unAmerican." I was listening to Mike Gallagher's show and a wife of a serviceman called and she was in tears as she said her husband just left for Iraq and Pres. Obama should not have said anything like that. The pain in her voice seemed real and I suspect many will try very hard to justify Iraq. Many won't.

MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE SAND

Some wingers reply to the charges of torture by saying something like "at least we didn't behead them" and as a result, I've been a little curious about the tradition of beheading. As is often the case, the Old Testament provides a classic example in the story of David versus Goliath:

1 Samuel
Revised Standard Version
17:48
When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.

17:49
And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

17:50
So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine, and killed him; there was no sword in the hand of David.

17:51
Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

17:52
And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Sha-ara'im as far as Gath and Ekron.

There are five other examples in the Books of Samuel.

ANOTHER LIE FROM A LIAR AT THE LYING NATIONAL REVIEW

This loon is as bad as the Baby Jesus Hannity.

Michael Rubin:

Obama abandons Democracy

Obama studiously avoids the word democracy.

Barack Obama:

The fourth issue that I will address is democracy. (Applause.)

(h/t Jonathan Chait)

OTOH, WINGNUTS ARE LOONS

One wingnut line of attack on Pres. Obama's Cairo speech is an attempt to claim he said that the Holocaust is on the same moral level as the Palestinian's situation. Huge Ego Hewitt and a couple of his guests (Steyn, Lileks) were upset about this and Erick at Red State is on the same page.

HANNITY REACHES A NEW LOW

I've monitored his radio show for years and I know he's a serial liar but this recent whopper is just astounding. During an interview for a French TV channel, Pres. Obama said this:
"If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world."

He's mistaken about the number, of course, but the point here is the outrageous lie from Hannity:
"Now, on his Middle East apology tour, the President calls the U.S. a "Muslim nation."

There's absolutely no excuse for this and I hope this exposure of Hannity, first done by Jed Lewison of Daily Ko's, spreads all over America.

WASHINGTON TIMES SUPPORTS DHS REPORT!!!

I love when the wingers undercut their own hysteria.
EXCLUSIVE: Al Qaeda eyes bio attack from Mexico
Seeks white militias as allies

By Sara A. Carter (Contact) | Wednesday, June 3, 2009

The video aired earlier this year as a recruitment tool makes clear that al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times.

In the video, obtained and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, al-Nafisi also suggests that al Qaeda might want to collaborate with members of native U.S. white supremacist militias who hate the federal government.

MEMO TO LIKUD: STOP WHINING!

Some Israeli politicians are complaining that Pres. Obama won't let Israel get away with expanding settlements the way the criminal Bush regime did. Heck, they even violated the agreements they had with Bush and even Elliot Abrams admits that:
“There has been physical expansion in some places, and the Palestinian Authority is right to object to it. Israeli settlement expansion beyond the security fence, in areas Israel will ultimately evacuate, is a mistake.”

THOSE 32 WORDS

The wingers and the MSM have been repeating the infamous 32 words from Judge Sotomayor's 2001 Berkeley speech and have made no attempt to provide the context. ABC Radio News doesn't even bother to quote the words and basically repeats Mike Gallagher's smear: Sotomayor said that a Latino woman would be a better judge than a white male.

Gloria Borger of CNN isn't much better than Gallagher:
Sotomayor's now infamous statement that, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Foolish, yes. Self-serving, sure.

BUDGET DEFICITS AND HEALTH CARE REFORM

(h/t David Dobbs at Neuron Culture)

Ezra Klein included a graph and a link to the Center for Economic and Policy Research in his WaPo column from May 18th that gives a nice feeling for how much money we waste on health care. Below I have chosen compare US health care costs as a percentage of GDP to those of Germany, Japan, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and Singapore. You can see that if we had a health care system like any of those countries, the outlying Federal budget deficits would turn into surpluses. (Click on image for larger version.)

ANOTHER WINGER NARRATIVE COLLAPSES

Remember how the wingers repeatedly said that the terrorists don't hate us for what we've done, they hate us for our freedoms? Well, they turned around and said that letting the photographs of torture at Abu Ghraib (what we did) will increase the hatred terrorists have for us.

This collapse was brought to you by curv3ball at The Poor Man Institute.

SENATOR DR. TOM COBURN SEZ...

he knows what torture is and the "enhanced interrogation techniques" aren't torture and he also repeated the lie that Judge Sotomayor is against the 2nd Amendment. These remarks brought to you courtesy of Slots Bennett's show Morning in America.

SLOTS SUCKS UP TO BIBI

Bill "Slots" Bennett just said that Benjamin (now Binyamin) Netanyahu (Bibi) said shortly after 9-11 that "today we are all Americans." If you were willing to bet that Slots was wrong, you would be a winner! In reality, this phrase came from an editorial in Le Monde on Sept. 12, 2001.

ANOTHER WINGNUT COLONEL

Lt. Colonel Gordon Cucullu was on the Rusty Humphries Show and claimed that the current inmates at Guantanamo, despite being held for years, have up-to-date information that can help us in the war on terror. He has his own website and he is loved by the war whores:
"I've also been 'inside GITMO,' and Cucullu's riveting account shows why we've been safer with it — and why we may soon regret being without it."— Monica Crowley

"Our new president should read it — twice — and take its truth-telling to heart." — Ralph Peters

"An explosive expos of what's really been happening - 'inside the wire' at Guantanamo. Gordon Cucullu - with his Special Forces background, thorough research and extensive visits to Gitmo - knows more about the now-infamous detention facility than any 'outsider.' This book is a must-read for all who care about how we protect ourselves from those who are dying to kill us." — Oliver North

"Inside Gitmo is a book of incalculable importance. It lays bare the myths and the stakes involved in the campaign to shut down a facility that any objective reader must conclude is vital to our national security. Every policy-maker in Washington and every citizen across America should study this books brilliant first-hand reporting and its alarming findings." — Frank Gaffney, Jr.

WHY CHENEY HAS BEEN DEFENDING TORTURE

He had a HUGE role in justifying it to Congress.
Cheney Led Briefings of Lawmakers To Defend Interrogation Techniques
By Paul Kane and Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Former vice president Richard B. Cheney personally oversaw at least four briefings with senior members of Congress about the controversial interrogation program, part of a secretive and forceful defense he mounted throughout 2005 in an effort to maintain support for the harsh techniques used on detainees.

Sen. Levin has claimed that Cheney is wrong about the contents of the 2 still-classified documents about interrogation: they don't reveal that torture provided valuable information.

MORE LIKE THIS, PLEASE

When Fats Limbaugh publicly admitted that he wanted Pres. Obama to fail, he did liberals a big favor because he exposed the negativity that underlies movement conservatism. A Southern Baptist pastor does the same thing about the murder of Dr. Tiller. This pastor was Alan Keyes running mate for the 2008 election.
Former SBC officer says Tiller murder answer to prayer
By Bob Allen
Tuesday, June 02, 2009
Associated Baptist Press

BUENA PARK, Calif. (ABP) -- While most pro-life leaders condemned the May 31 murder of a controversial abortion provider inside his Wichita, Kan., church, one former Southern Baptist Convention official called it an answer to prayer.

"I am glad George Tiller is dead," Wiley Drake, the SBC's former second vice president, said on his Crusade Radio program June 1.

"There may be a lot who would say, 'Oh that is mean. You shouldn't be that way,'" Drake said. "Well, no, it's an answer to prayer."

"This man, George Tiller, was far greater in his atrocities than Adolf Hitler," Drake said. "So I am happy. I am glad that he is dead...."

I CAN HEAR SEAN HANNITY NOW

Pres. Obama said this in during an interview with French TV station Canal Plus:
“And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” Mr. Obama said.

I'm almost sure Hannity will omit the context and claim Pres. Obama said America is "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world."

In a piece that seems choreographed by the right-wing, Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller of ABC News report that one of the National Security Council staff said "the President himself experienced Islam on three continents..." Judging by the comments on this article, I'd say Tapper may have single-handedly put the "Obama is a Muslim" meme back in play.

THE LONDON TIMES ISN'T ANY BETTER THAN THE TELEGRAPH

It also gives space to neo-conservative hacks and is another source for the radio gasbags. The latest piece by war whore Amir Taheri, "a commentator on Islamic affairs," is a fine example of the Times cloaking the true identity of the writer.

THE TELEGRAPH LOVES WINGNUTS

I've noticed that the radio gasbags will occasionally read an article from Britain's conservative Telegraph and try to use the foreign source as a way to claim objectivity. Most of the articles are pure winger fantasies like this one from a hack who works that the Heritage Foundation. He repeats the lie that Pres. Obama has not only slashed defense spending but also "dramatically" reduced spending on missile defense.

ANDY MCCARTHY HATES OUR MILITARY

(I'm just copying the hysterical response of many conservatives to any criticism of the military)

Here's the situation, a well-known and very well-respected American general says we violated the Geneva Conventions. What's a wingnut war whore to do? Obviously, assert that the general doesn't know the law.

WHY DON'T WE HEAR THESE STORIES IN THE MAJOR MEDIA?

Plenty of air time is given to anti-choice people and groups but I've never heard the stories of ordinary people who were faced with the difficult decision.

THE RADIO CONS STILL AFTER JUDGE SOTOMAJOR

Mike Gallagher brutally distorts her 32 words into a naked and absolute claim that a Latino woman would be a better judge than any white male.

UNLIKE MARK LEVIN, BILL O'REILLY STANDS BY HIS PAST REMARKS

Well, at least in the case of Dr. Tiller. Yesterday, O'Reilly declared that he stood by all his past remarks about Dr. Tiller.

MARK LEVIN IS A HYPOCRITE

I knew that but it's nice to have a mainstream publication point that out.
Conservatives Ask Republican Senators to Filibuster on Sotomayor
By Charles Savage
June 1, 2009, 3:52 pm
NYT The Caucus

Another signatory on the new letter is Mark Levin, the conservative talk show host. In January 2006, when some Democratic senators tried and failed to block a vote on the Supreme Court confirmation of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., Mr. Levin accused them of violating the Constitution.

“We have Senate liberals tonight saying that they want to filibuster Sam Alito in the name of defending what they claim are constitutional rights,” Mr. Levin said. “Yet the very act of a filibuster against a judicial nominee is in my view unconstitutional. This is how liberals talk. This is how they behave. They say one thing and they mean another. They speak out of one side of their mouth as well as the other.”

Mr. Levin also signed an April 24, 2005 letter to Republican leaders in the Senate urging them to eliminate the rule that allowed filibusters on judicial nominees. The group, calling itself the “Coalition to End Judicial Filibusters,” declared that “the Constitution mandates” a simple majority vote when the Senate is performing its role of “advice and consent” to the president’s choices.

THE DHS REPORT WAS ON TO SOMETHING

Right-wing extremists have become energized by the election of Pres. Obama and this is a pattern we've seen before, according to Christina Page in HuffPo:
In March 1993, three months into the administration of our first pro-choice president, Bill Clinton, abortion provider Dr. David Gunn was murdered in Pensacola, Florida. That was the beginning of what would become a five-fold increase in violence against abortion providers throughout the Clinton years.

Scott Roeder, the murderer of Dr. Tiller, was also a right-wing extremist, according to this report from McClatchy:
Roeder, who in the 1990s was a manufacturing assemblyman, also was involved in the "Freemen" movement. "Freemen" was a term adopted by those who claimed sovereignty from government jurisdiction and operated under their own legal system, which they called common-law courts. Adherents declared themselves exempt from laws, regulations and taxes and often filed liens against judges, prosecutors and others, claiming that money was owed to them as compensation. ... In April 1996, Roeder was arrested in Topeka after Shawnee County sheriff's deputies stopped him for not having a proper license plate. ... Roeder, who then lived in Silver Lake, Kan., was stopped because he had an improper license plate that read "Sovereign private property. Immunity declared by law. Non-commercial American.'' Authorities said the plate was typical of those used by Freemen.

This sort of secessionist thinking is promoted by right-wing talk radio.

I'M SURPRISED IT HASN'T HAPPENED MORE OFTEN

The premises of the pro-life movement and simple logic leads inexorably to the conclusion that it is a moral duty to prevent abortions, even to the point of murdering doctors. One poster at the extremist blog Red State puts the issue very clearly and that's how many other movement conservatives view this:
Christian Newswire:
George Tiller was a Mass-Murderer, says Randall Terry — We Grieve That he Did Not Have Time to Properly Prepare his Soul to Face God — Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, led protests against George Tiller's late-term abortion clinic in Wichita in 1991.

THE PARTY OF ANGRY WHITE GUYS

Pat Buchanan and Tom Tancredo have played the Race Card on Judge Sotomayor. Buchanan whines about the "hostility and bigotry toward white males in America..." and Tancredo admits by default that he thinks Pres. Obama hates whites:
SHUSTER: Mr. Tancredo, do you agree that the Obama administration hates white people?

TANCREDO: Oh [sighs], I don’t know. But I’ll tell you this –

SHUSTER: You don’t know? In other words, they might?

TANCREDO: What do I — I have no idea whether they hate white people or not!

If you think the GOP Senate leaders would try to dissuade this sort of agit-prop, you would be wrong.
