Vote Endorses Muslim Center Near Ground Zero

After a raucous hearing, a Manhattan community board backed a proposal on Tuesday evening to build a Muslim community center near the World Trade Center.
The 29-to-1 vote, with 10 abstentions, followed a four-hour back-and-forth between those who said the community center would be a monument to tolerance and those who believed it would be an affront to victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

REMEMBER THE WINGERS EMPHASIS ON LOCAL DECISION-MAKING?
As I was reading Justin Raimondo's post about the rabid winger hatred toward a proposed mosque and community center two blocks from Ground Zero, I was reminded of how this opposition goes against the conservatives supposed worship of local decision-making.
GRADING ON A CURVE
Back in 2003-2004, I was concerned about being too harsh on the wingnuts because that might turn off the precious independent voters. I gradually came to the conclusion that there's no sense grading these imbeciles on a curve, so I might as well give them "Fs" without any pussyfooting.
THE RUBES GET FOOLED AGAIN
Here's a screen capture from Memeorandum:

Not all of them are rubes, however.

I ALSO DIDN'T RECALL THIS
Fats Limbaugh often claims that Pres. Obama promised us a new, post-racial society but he has failed miserably. I didn't think Pres. Obama made this claim and Eleanor Clifton agrees:
We taped the McLaughlin Group Friday afternoon, and moderator John McLaughlin suggested that after this week's events, what a disappointment Obama is after having promised us a post-racial presidency. Panelist Clarence Page pointed out that nowhere did Obama claim such a thing, that the post-racial presidency is a media creation. Yes, candidate Obama gave a thoughtful speech on race in Philadelphia after racially incendiary tapes of his pastor's sermons surfaced, but it was more to save his campaign than to assert himself as the paragon of a new racial paradigm.
ART BELL DOES GOOD
He subbed for George Noory on Coast to Coast AM last night and had a scientist to discuss man-made global warming. Here's the bio from the Coast site:
Both Ward and Art think there's no doubt about man-made global warming (mmgw) and because there's a lot of overlap between Art's audience and the audience for the right-wing gasbags, this was an important show. Art even made fun of the rubes who call people who think mmgw is real "communists."

WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM A GOP HOUSE
Endless subpoenas and hearings, reminiscent of the Clinton years, and perhaps even impeachment.
WHY BLACKS DON'T VOTE FOR THE GOP
They remember the Southern Strategy:
GOP: 'We were wrong' to play racial politics
By Richard Benedetto, USA TODAY
Posted 7/14/2005 11:49 PM
Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman apologized to one of the nation's largest black civil rights groups Thursday, saying Republicans had not done enough to court blacks in the past and had exploited racial strife to court white voters, particularly in the South.
"Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization," Mehlman said at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong."
FATS RE-USES AN OLD MEME
Limbaugh used to rail against the "elite," by which he meant smart, educated liberals. I haven't heard him do this for over a year but today he's back on that rocking horse.

SHARRON ANGLE AD
According to data from the U.S. Census, the population of Nevada is composed of 8.1% Blacks, 6.2% Asian and 25.7% Hispanic. This means that about 40% of Nevadans aren't white. See if you can find them in this Angle ad. Here's a screen capture:

SOME FAUX NEWS PEOPLE JUST CAN'T LEARN
Yesterday, Bill O'Reilly decided that Shirley Sherrod was a divisive liberal activist who shouldn't get her job back and on radio, John Gibson made pretty much the same claim.

I THOUGHT BRET BAIER WAS A LITTLE BETTER THAN THE REST OF FAUX NEWS
But I guess he isn't (or he doesn't himself watch FAUX News). After the Breitbart/Sherrod video story blew up in the faces of the pigs on FAUX, Baier falsely claimed that FAUX didn't cover the story.
THE WINGNUTS BRAY A LOT ABOUT THE LATE SEN. BYRD
But they NEVER tell us about their own diehard racist pig, Strom Thurmond:
As Senator, Thurmond served on a number of important committees, including Armed Services, Judiciary and Veterans Affairs. He was President Pro Tempore from 1981-1987, and served as chairman of the Judiciary Committee during the same period; he became President Pro Tempore again in 1995 and that same year became chairman of the Armed Services Committee. He was the originator of the 1956 "Southern Manifesto" against the 1954 Supreme Court desegregation ruling. Thurmond holds the record for the longest filibuster in Senate history; he spoke against the 1957 civil rights bill for twenty-four hours, eighteen minutes. He switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in 1964 and aided Barry Goldwater in his unsuccessful bid for the Presidency against Lyndon Johnson. Thurmond was instrumental in the "southern strategy" that won the White House for Richard M. Nixon in 1968. Thurmond is the author of The Faith We Have Not Kept (1968).
2 PENALTIES FOR OUR SIDE
The biggest one is the WH cave on Shirley Sherrod, the minor one is Spencer Ackermann urging his colleagues to act like as if they work for The Weekly Standard.
THE FARMER DEFENDS SHERROD
From POLITICO:
The farmer, Roger Spooner, now 87, appeared on CNN on Tuesday night from his Georgia home and said Sherrod had been “helpful in every way — she saved our farm.”
“This … is a bunch of hogwash, in my opinion,” he said on “Anderson Cooper 360.” “She was just as nice to us as anyone could have been. And, as far as racism and all, that's — it's just ridiculous.”
JUST FOR REFERENCE...
July 28 will be the one year anniversary of Glenn Beck calling Pres. Obama a racist.

I think she should get her job back. I think she's owed apologies from pretty much everyone, including my good friend Andrew Breitbart.
LET'S SAY THE SPLIT REALLY IS 40% to 20%
between conservatives and liberals. Shouldn't that mean FAUX News shows like Bill O'Reilly's have ratings between 20-25 million?

Dylan Matthews at the Washington Post has asked what we might be able to do for the economy if we repealed the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and spent the money on something else. The result is a nice post full of graphs, but the answer seems to be "not much"--the very best estimate is that we get about $75 billion in added economic activity, or about $25 for every person in the country.

40 days and 40 nights
Last night on TV, Glenn asked you to take a pledge and to start changing the priorities in your life. You may not be going all Tiger Woods, but we are all human and we all have flaws. We must work on correcting those first, individually, if we are going to change the way things are done in America and preserve the Republic. What can you do? Take the pledge and start 40 days and 40 nights TODAY.
Hannity talked about Shirley Sherrod but did not mention that Andrew Breitbart was responsible for the smear although he did have Breitbart on his TV show and Andrew did not do his cause any good:
HANNITY: Let me ask you a last question. How do you feel about the White House's firing of her in light of everything that we know and what we've learned? Do you think it was the right decision? And do you think, you know, what she -- how do you feel in total about what she said on that tape?
Do you think it was racist? Did you want her fired?
BREITBART: I don't. I don't -- I have to be honest with you. I'm agnostic on the issue because I'm invested in getting the NAACP and the Democratic Party and the Congressional Black Caucus to stop constantly calling the Tea Party racist, that's my job.
I could care less about Shirley Sherrod. To be honest with you. This is not about Shirley Sherrod.

AND STILL NO INDICTMENTS OF THE CRIMINAL BUSH REGIME
Ex-MI5 spy chief: No link between Iraq and 9/11
Jul 20 02:21 PM US/Eastern
By DAVID STRINGER
Associated Press Writer
LONDON (AP) - The war in Iraq led to a loss of focus on the threat from al-Qaida, emboldened the group's leader Osama bin Laden, and helped to breed a generation of homegrown terrorists, Britain's former domestic spy chief told an inquiry Tuesday.
Making the sharpest criticism so far aired in Britain's inquiry into mistakes made in the Iraq war, Eliza Manningham-Buller, director of the MI5 agency between 2002 and 2007, said Britain's government paid little attention to warnings that the war would fuel domestic terrorism.
The ex-spy chief said those pushing the case for war in the United States gave undue prominence to scraps of inconclusive intelligence on possible links between Iraq and the 2001 attacks. She singled out the then-U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
"It is why Donald Rumsfeld started an alternative intelligence unit in the Pentagon to seek an alternative judgment," said Manningham-Buller, who was a frequent visitor to the U.S. as MI5 chief.
Manningham-Buller also said Iraq had posed little threat before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, and insisted there was no evidence of a link between former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
Manningham-Buller also indicated that MI5 disagreed with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair over a key justification for the war—Iraq's purported harboring of weapons of mass destruction.
She said the belief that Iraq might use such weapons against the West "wasn't a concern in either the short term or the medium term to either my colleagues or myself."
SB 1070 MAY NOT BE RACIST
But some of the freaks supporting it certainly are, including FAUX News Sheriff Babeu.

Apology issued over Sheriff Babeu's spot on white-separatist show
By Tim Steller, Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Tuesday, July 20, 2010 10:24 am
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu’s new spokesman, Tim Gaffney, apologized late Monday night for having scheduled the sheriff on a radio program with a white separatist agenda.
Babeu, who has appeared frequently on national TV and radio programs, was interviewed July 10 on The Political Cesspool, a Tennessee-based weekly radio show.
The show’s website declares “We represent a philosophy that is pro-White.”
It goes on: “We wish to revive the White birthrate above replacement level fertility and beyond to grow the percentage of Whites in the world relative to other races.”

WITHOUT EDITING, WOULD THE WINGNUTS HAVE ANY GOOD CLIPS?
Shirley Sherrod spoke at an NAACP convention and Breitbart published a clip of her talk that made it seem like she was a black racist. In fact, her speech was about how she overcame racism 24 years ago when she had to deal with a white racist farmer.

The 82-year-old wife of the white Georgia farmer who was supposedly discriminated against some quarter century ago by the black USDA official forced to resign this week -- if the video released by Andrew Breitbart's Big Government and re-run by Fox is to be believed -- is now confirming that in fact Shirley Sherrod saved her and her husband's farm from bankruptcy and is a "friend for life."
CNN also spoke with the farmer's wife and with Sherrod. Rachel Slajda has more.

LARRY SUMMERS, 20 YEARS AGO AND NOW
This is a nice little refutation of the wingnut claim that all unemployment benefits do is prolong unemployment, a line of reasoning that goes back to Von Mises.
The Economic Case for Extending Unemployment Insurance
Posted by Lawrence Summers on July 14, 2010 at 09:03 AM EDT
Some opponents of providing relief to unemployed families have been making the fallacious claim that unemployment benefits are a cause of the unemployment we are face today. Some of them have even taken an article I wrote two decades ago, under different economic circumstances, and used excerpts out of context to suggest that I share their view.
This is a misreading both of my research and of the economic situation today.
In an economy that is as demand constrained as ours, whatever small changes in search intensity may be associated with unemployment insurance are not the reason for the persistence of joblessness. With five unemployed Americans seeking work for every job opening available, there can be little doubt that the overwhelming cause of unemployment is not a lack of will among the jobless to find work, but a lack of work opportunities.
Opposing extending unemployment benefits will do nothing to put people back to work. It will not result in an increased number of job openings to apply for. And it will not result in a higher level of employment. What it will do is create a more difficult situation for thousands of families hit hardest by the economic crisis and cut off a powerful channel for spurring economic growth.

In Helvering v. Davis, 301 U.S. 619 (1937), the Supreme Court upheld the Social Security legislation by a vote of 7 to 2 (McReynolds & Butler dissenting). What I found of particular interest is the Court's finding about the 10th Amendment challenge:

Second. The scheme of benefits created by the provisions of Title II is not in contravention of the limitations of the Tenth Amendment.
Congress may spend money in aid of the "general welfare." Constitution, Art. I, section 8; United States v. Butler, 297 U.S. 1, 65; Steward Machine Co. v. Davis, supra. There have been great statesmen in our history who have stood for other views. We will not resurrect the contest. It is now settled by decision. United States v. Butler, supra. The conception of the spending power advocated by Hamilton and strongly reinforced by Story has prevailed over that of Madison, which has not been lacking in adherents. ... Nor is the concept of the general welfare static. Needs that were narrow or parochial a century ago may be interwoven in our day with the well-being of the Nation. What is critical or urgent changes with the times.
