LAST DITCH DEFENSE?

Some wingnuts just can't smell the coffee: Christine O'Donnell is toast but Donald Douglas of American Power and Dan Riehl of Riehl World View can't admit that she's a LOSER.

O'DONNELL IS BETTER THAN PALIN

If one is scoring by humor potential, O'Donnell has Caribou Barbie in her rear view mirror. The latest revelation is that she admitted to dabbling in witchcraft which I think is even worse than Mormonism for the Fundies. Assrocket has concluded that her campaign is DOA and Think Progress notes that she's canceled her scheduled appearances on Face the Nation and Fox News Sunday.

THE O'DONNELL IRONIES

Christine O'Donnell's victory in the GOP primary in Delaware is chock full of ironies if you think of movement conservatives the way I do. Last week on Hannity's radio show, she whined about people "generating stories based on half-truths and lies" and I think a normal person would reply, "Well, that's the party you're in and that's what the host (Hannity) does 5 days a week."

Adding a little more irony to this is Karl Rove's criticism of O'Donnell which was mostly based on minor events in her life. His remarks gave us an insight into how he would attack her and we know we could count on people like Hannity to amplify the suspicions.

ANOTHER TAKE ON THE BAGGERS

Maybe they are pretty much the old religious right freak shows, just dressed a little oddly and babbling about the Constitution. I recall watching a clip from Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally and one male interviewee said that America began losing honor with the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Furthermore, the Bagger candidate for Senate in Delaware is clearly a Fundie and so is Sharron Angle.

Nancy L. Cohen has more on this approach to the Baggers.

APPEALING TO AN ILLUSION

Conservatives love to claim they represent the Heartland of America but the Heartland as they describe it doesn't represent America. Here's one example.

RED STATE WOES

The good news is that Arizona isn't leading the US in poverty rates; the bad news is that we're second to Mississippi. Arizona is a SOLID Republican state so this should pose a problem for the radio gasbags like Sean Hannity who keep pointing fingers at Blue states which have financial problems. BTW, California and New York aren't even in the top 10.
Arizona is now No. 2 in poverty
21.2 percent rate trails only Mississippi's, Census Bureau reports
Arizona Daily Star
PHOENIX - More than one-fifth of Arizonans live in poverty, a figure higher than anywhere else in the nation except Mississippi.

Figures Thursday from the U.S. Census Bureau show nearly 1.4 million Arizonans in households earning less than the federal poverty level - about 21.2 percent.

The national figure is approaching 43.6 million, just 14.3 percent.

RUNNING FROM THE PRESS

Several prominent winger politicians, like Sarah Palin, simply refuse to appear before anything to the left of FAUX News. Sharron Angle even walked away from her own news conference and more recently has backed out of a debate Harry Reid. Those running for office may be able to get away with this for the primaries but it's hard to see this being effective in the general election.

I HEARD THIS LAST NIGHT

and I was surprised that Sen. McConnell could be so tone deaf.

He said the top 2% are "the people who've been hit hardest by this recession."

This should make a good ad for the Democrats.

NAH, IT'S NOT A CLASS ISSUE

Glenn Greenwald argues that some of the attacks on Christine O'Donnell comes from the Villager mentality that deems her underbred. Atrios thinks there's something to this but I disagree. First, Karl Rove was correct in saying that she is "nutty." Second, there are some real issues about her background. Third, she's running in Delaware, not Oklahoma.

IN HANNITY'S "FREE MARKET," THE OWNERS HAVE NO RIGHTS

Adam Smith noted over 200 years ago that senior executives would come to see the company they run as their own personal fiefdom instead of watching out for the interests of the real owners, the stock holders. Nothing has changed since then...
Morgan Stanley fights NY executive pay lawsuit

NEW YORK | Thu Sep 16, 2010 3:39pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In a case stemming from the public outcry over multimillion dollar executive pay even as the U.S. government bailed out financial firms, Morgan Stanley lawyers argued on Thursday that shareholders had not shown legal standing to seek damages at trial.

I know it's almost impossible to discredit Rush Limbaugh but it is a great sign that a major news outlet points out that "El Rushbo" was taken in by an Internet hoax.
Limbaugh Taken In: The Judge Was Not Loaded for Bear
By KEVIN SACK
Published: September 15, 2010

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Anyone listening to Rush Limbaugh’s radio show Tuesday could be forgiven for thinking that Judge Roger Vinson has the federal government dead in his sights.

Mr. Limbaugh spent some time profiling Judge Vinson, a senior judge on the Federal District Court in Pensacola, who had just announced he would allow a legal challenge to the new health care law to advance to a full hearing. The conservative radio host informed his listeners that the judge was an avid hunter and amateur taxidermist who once killed three brown bears and mounted their heads over his courtroom door to “instill the fear of God into the accused.”

“This,” Mr. Limbaugh said, “would not be good news” for liberal supporters of the health law.

But, in fact, Judge Vinson has never shot anything other than a water moccasin (last Saturday, at his weekend cabin), is not a taxidermist and, as president of the American Camellia Society, is far more familiar with Camellia reticulata than with Ursus arctos.

Apparently, Mr. Limbaugh had fallen prey to an Internet hoax.

Just like Limbaugh, his staff doesn't admit to making a mistake:
Kit Carson, a spokesman for Mr. Limbaugh, said a staff researcher had found the information in an article on the Pensacola newspaper’s Web site, and not on Wikipedia. But Ginny Graybiel, the paper’s managing editor, said it had never published such material.

RADIO TIDBITS

UPDATE: War Whore Laura Ingraham took the same approach as Hannity.

Hannity is in extreme defense mode over Christine O'Donnell so the negative remarks by Karl Rove and other conservatives about O'Donnell must be having quite an impact. I listened to a few other right-wing shows yesterday and there were a LOT of callers who backed O'Donnell over Rove, so this may be a serious split that could help Dems this November.

IN ADDITION TO HATING SEXUALITY, CHRISTINE O'DONNELL ALSO HATES SCIENCE

UPDATE: New York Magazine also ran with this expose.

I suppose this should have been predictable. At the time, O'Donnell was working for wingnut hive Concerned Women for America.

And what's O'Donnell's deal? Well, she doesn't believe in the greenhouse effect. But she also doesn't believe in evolution. New York's Dan Amira dug up an old discussion (I hesitate to use the term "debate") O'Donnell had with a University of Tennessee evolutionary biologist:

THIS IS GREAT!

(h/t Atrios)

I noted below that David Weigel correctly thinks Mark "Foamer" Levin is a waste of time. He now has plenty of conservative company.

Levin has pissed off a lot of his conservative colleagues who have finally discovered that he's an asshole. This is one of the better quotes from Stephen Hayes:
Mark Levin's attack on John McCormack is a disgrace. And I say that as someone who has considered Mark a friend for 15 years.

WE OLDSTERS ARE GOING TO GET SCREWED

Those who do manual labor will find it difficult if not impossible to continue working if the retirement age for Social Security is increased (h/t Atrios) which is something Catfood Commissioner Alan Simpson wants to do. YES, HANNITY HAS KNOWN O'DONNELL FOR YEARS

I did a LexisNexis search on "Hannity," "Christine O'Donnell", all available dates and came up with transcripts going back to 1999. During this period, O'Donnell's main issue seems to be sex and sexuality.

ROVE IS NOW ON THE BAGGER SHIT LIST

UPDATE: video clip at Crooks & Liars.
UPDATE II: Fats Limbaugh wigs out on Rove.

On Hannity's TV show yesterday1, he made some critical remarks about Christine O'Donnell:
ROVE: Well, look I'm not certain of this because look, there were conservatives on both sides of this race in Delaware. One thing that Christine O'Donnell is now going to have to answer in the general election that she didn't have to answer in the primary is her own checkered background.

You made my case. You made out a list of the things that Mike Castle had done wrong. You didn't make out a list of the things that Christine O'Donnell had done right. I've met her. I got to tell you, I wasn't frankly impressed as her abilities as a candidate.

And again, these serious questions about how does she make her living? Why did she mislead voters about her college education? How come it took nearly two decades to pay her college bills so she could get her college degree? How did she make a living? Why didn't she sue a well-known and well - conservative think tank?
Rove is referring to this puzzle:
O'Donnell raised eyebrows with one of her first acts as a new candidate, when she officially disclosed her finances. In a Senate financial disclosure report from July, O'Donnell reported just $5,800 in earned income between March 2009 and July 2010. She says she worked for two companies, one a marketing firm and the other a conservative political action committee.

According to Federal Election Commission data, O'Donnell contributed $3,026 of her own money, or more than half her reported "earned income" to her campaign.

UH OH, MALKIN ATTACKS UNCLE KARL

On her own website, Malkin had this entry:
Rove bashes O’Donnell; O’Donnell supporter at victory party strikes back; NRSC cuts and runs
By Michelle Malkin • September 14, 2010 10:43 PM

I just finished watching Karl Rove trashing GOP Senate primary winner Christine O’Donnell. It was on Sean Hannity’s FNC show. Might as well have been Olbermann on MSNBC. The establishment Beltway strategist couldn’t even bother with an obligatory word of congratulations for O’Donnell.

More like this, please!

THIS IS AT LEAST POLITE

I think Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) is too conservative on just about all issues but he at least had the decency to retract a false claim he made about Rachel Maddow.
Gregg retracts Maddow jab
Ben Smith
POLITICO
September 14, 2010

Senator Judd Gregg told me in my story today that misinformation about what he sees as the successful TARP program had been driven in party by a deceitful media.

"It’s become demonized on the left and the right by screamers — Glenn Beck and Rachel Maddow — who have no interest in the facts; they’re just interested in hyperbolizing and generating attention,” he said.

But Gregg today retracted his attack on the MSNBC host -- though not on Fox's Beck -- in a statement through a spokeswoman.

It seems that I was inaccurate in characterizing Ms. Maddow as having attacked TARP when I was quoted in your article. She has, in fact, defended the results of this program," he said.

I IMAGINE MARK LEVIN RECENTLY WENT "STICKY WET"

Tea party favorite O'Donnell wins in Delaware

GOOD FOR DAVID WEIGEL!

He uses plain, honest language to describe Mark Levin:
For all of your posing about legal theory and the Constitution, you make it pretty clear here that you're a political hack.

Levin's a short-tempered hack, and not really worth your time.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS?

When conservatives talk about how great it was in the past, it's never quite clear how far back they mean. For some movement conservatives like Mark Levin or freak conservatives like Glenn Beck, it means going back to the 19th Century, for others like Michael Savage it seems to the the 50s. I think the Fundies want to go back to the days when the church had more more say in civil life. There were two main punishments for wrongdoing, excommunication and execution.

In Christ's churches purely reformed : a social history of Calvinism by Philip Benedict, we have some indication of the number of excommunications in Geneva in the 16th Century (p. 104):

Here's some data about executions in the Netherlands (p.176):

THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD "LIBERTARIAN"

Ever tire of bonehead Baggers claiming that the Founders were libertarians? Then point out to them the origin of the concept.

In politics, the word seems to date from 1920, according to the Oxford English Dictionary:
DRAFT ADDITIONS JUNE 2006

libertarian, n. and adj.

n. * Polit. (orig. U.S.). A person who believes the role of the government should be limited to upholding individual rights, and who therefore opposes government regulation of economic or social affairs; an anti-statist. Also (with capital initial): a member of any of various political parties promoting these views.

1920 Amer. Jrnl. Sociol. 26 68 The enlightened libertarian is not today greatly interested in academic attacks on the metaphysical state or the political state. He is interested in well-directed attacks on special privilege and shielded, protected monopolies... Flank attacks on the state are far more effective at this stage than frontal attacks. 1966 Washington Post 30 July A17/1, I used to think of myself as a ‘libertarian’, or an ‘anti-Statist’... But in a world that has no room for subtleties, we libertarians find ourselves classified as conservatives. 1972 N.Y. Times 6 Feb. I. 47/6 Asked at a news conference if the approach of the Libertarians was not close to anarchy, Mr. Nolan replied, ‘Anarchy is simply Libertarianism carried to an unworkable extreme.’ 1991 Sat. Night (Toronto) Nov. 31/3 He was coming straight back to Toronto, presumably to lead the Libertarians to victory in the Canadian federal election. 1996 R. BORK Slouching towards Gomorrah II. vii. 150 Libertarians join forces with modern liberals in opposing censorship.

I REALLY DON'T LIKE PAPER WORK

But unlike Atrios and Mithras, I don't think that the 1099 requirement is that onerous. I mean, how hard can it be to keep track of vendor purchases with EXCEL?

WHY HASN'T BECK DENOUNCED THESE TWO?

(h/t Atrios)

Glenn Beck babbles 5 days a week about upholding the Constitution but has said nothing about Marty Peretz and Cal Thomas arguing that we should takes rights away from American Muslims.

MORE FRACTURES!!!

The conservatives are starting to fall apart. First, Dick Armey of Freedom Works, in an obvious effort to pander to the Fundies, says that social issues like abortion are top priorities:
'Tea party's' Dick Armey: A GOP majority would take up abortion fight

but in the same article, the president of Freedom Works says otherwise:
Freedom Works CEO Matt Kibbe said there was no official tea party position on social issues. “I don’t think there is. This is why we call this movement beautiful chaos. And there is a lot of diversity of opinion on a lot of these other issues. But again the issues that we all agree on are the issues that matter most to the nation today. And it is getting our government under control, it is getting our budget balanced, it is getting the economy going.”

There's another divide over Christine O'Donnell, who's backed by the Baggers, Sarah Palin, Jim DeMint, Fats Limbaugh, Mark Levin and Sean Hannity and opposed by Charles Krauthammer, Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes, Paul Mirengoff and John McCormack.

JAN BREWER IS A LIAR

And she's not the only one. Most movement conservatives have been attacking illegal immigrants by falsely claiming they are responsible for the rise in crime. One problem: crime in Arizona is DOWN.
FBI report Arizona crime down

The FBI reports a drop in crime in Arizona. New numbers from the bureau show overall violent crime fell by 13.9% last year.

That includes a 22% decrease in murder or manslaughter, and a nearly four percent decline in rapes.

In the meantime, property crimes also dipped by nearly 12%, pushed by a 32% drop in vehicle thefts.

ANOTHER GOP MYTH TAKES A HIT

The tiresome "I never got a job from a poor man" excuse to lower taxes on the wealthiest just took a hit that was reported by Bloomberg News. I suspect Hannity & Limbaugh won't tell their listeners this because it refutes their economic ideology.

Rich Americans Save Tax Cuts Instead of Spending, Moody's Says
By Timothy R. Homan - Sep 13, 2010 9:48 AM MT

Hand the wealthiest Americans a tax cut and history suggests they will save the money rather than spend it.

Tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 under President George W. Bush were followed by increases in the saving rate among the rich, according to data from Moody’s Analytics Inc. When taxes were raised under Bill Clinton, the saving rate fell.

The findings may weaken arguments by Republicans and some Democrats in Congress who say allowing the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans to lapse will prompt them to reduce their spending, harming the economy.

TONY BLAIR IS A CHEAP WHORE

I'm listening to him on Hannity's radio show and he just agreed with Sean that "this is a battle of civilizations."

FATS POACHES ON BECK

Today Limbaugh trotted out the Cloward & Piven theory that Beck first brought up in order to explain why the economy was doing so poorly: It's all on purpose because the radicals (liberals) want to bring down the entire system!

WE DON'T LISTEN TO YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE FUCKING MORONS

(h/t Avedon at The Sideshow)

This Rick Perlstein article brought this snippet from a Bagger to my attention:
"We're sick and tired of being ignored," a Beck follower was quoted in a cover story in Time magazine.

The TIME article identifies the Bagger: Deanna Frankowski of Leeds, Alabama. We also learn that she's just another rube who believes in the Free Market Fairy:
Frankowski has been hit hard by the economic turmoil of the past year. Short of funds to make the trip, she painted an American flag on a pane of glass and asked people at her church to chip in toward her expenses, with one of them taking home the flag. She would like to share a house with her soon-to-be husband, but first she must figure out how to get free of the house she has — the one with the underwater mortgage. Some left-leaning writers argue that people in her boat must be deluded to oppose Barack Obama, but Frankowski is skeptical that her interests are being served by trillions in new government interventions. So she said, "I've paid my mortgage every month. And I'm getting no help. I'm just saying, Let capitalism work."

RADIO GASBAGS & THE RATINGS

RADIO-INFO has a list of Arbitron markets that gives the breakdown for each station and I looked at a few markets I thought would have a lot of conservatives. Not one of the conservative stations was in the top 10 by CUME. I only included stations that has at least 2 of the big 3 (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck) on during the day.

The number in brackets "[]" represents national market size ranking.

CUME is "In the practice of measuring the size of US commercial broadcasting and newspaper audiences, cume, short for "cumulative audience," is a measure of the total number of unique listeners over a period."
[5]Dallas-Ft. Worth has KBAP, which has Limbaugh, Hannity and Mark Levin. It ranks 17th by CUME.

[6]Houston-Galveston has KTRH, which has Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. It ranks 16th by CUME.

[15]Phoenix has KFYI, which has Limbaugh and Hannity. It ranks 22nd by CUME.

[19]Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater has WFLA, which has Beck and Limbaugh during the day. It ranks 15th by CUME.

[21]St. Louis has KFTK-FM, which has Beck and Hannity. It ranks 18th by CUME.

[30]Salt Lake City has KNRS, which has Beck and Limbaugh. It ranks 29th by CUME.

[31]San Antonio has WOAI, which has Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. It ranks 17th by CUME.

[32]Kansas City (MO) has Beck and Limbaugh. It ranks 13th by CUME.

[33]Las Vegas has Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity. It ranks 22nd by CUME.

THEY MAY HAVE THE RATINGS...

but overall, not that many people are regular listeners/vewiers to the biggest radio gasbags: Limbaugh, Hannity & Beck.

This chart is from a just released Pew study:

There were a total of 3,006 adults in the survey, so it's safe to assume that these results are reliable.

THE QUEEN OF THE BAGGERS IS STILL WHINING

Do you remember Creampuff Katie Couric's interview of Sarah Palin? This part was seen by most people as a big FAIL on Palin's part:
Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?

Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.

Couric: What, specifically?

Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.

Couric: Can you name a few?

Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

Yesterday, Palin reminded us that she hasn't forgiven the news media for exposing her incompetence:
“Let me tell you, folks, it’s a brutal, leftist-dominated lamestream media world out there,” Mrs. Palin screamed to a cheering crowd of about 4,000 at a sprawling downtown convention center here.

PROBABLY TUESDAY

Rep. John Boehner (R) made a surprising announcement today:
Boehner backs tax cuts limited to middle class
Sep 12 12:30 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republican leader John Boehner says he would support extending tax cuts only for middle-class earners even though he considers it "bad policy" to exclude the highest-earning Americans from tax relief during a recession.

Fats Limbaugh will attack Boehner on Monday and by Tuesday, Boehner will back down.

LYING WHORE HANNITY GETS NAILED

(h/t Raw Story)

Howard Kurtz on CNN's Reliable Sources catches Hannity pulling a Breitbart by editing a video clip to make Pres. Obama look bad. Here's the transcript:
KURTZ: Time now for the "Media Monitor," our weekly look at the hits and errors in the news business. ... Sean Hannity is no fan of Barack Obama, and he's perfectly entitled to bash him night after night. But here's how the Fox News host analyzed Obama's recent speech in Ohio.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SEAN HANNITY, FOX NEWS: Now, the president did have a rare moment of honesty during his speech, and I hope voters around the country are watching this --

OBAMA: Taxes are scheduled to go up substantially next year for everybody.
HANNITY: All right, that's right. I know the anointed one will make sure that that happens.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KURTZ: But just a second. Here's a little bit more of what Obama said.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

OBAMA: Under the tax plan passed by the last administration, taxes are scheduled to go up substantially next year for everybody. By the way, this was by design.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KURTZ: So Hannity's careful editing just happens to leave out Obama's explanation that the Bush administration had arranged for the tax cuts to expire in 2010, not to mention that Obama wants to extend the tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans while ending them for the wealthiest taxpayers.

Isn't that kind of editing -- what's the word -- deceptive? A tip of the hat to "The Daily Show" for catching that one.
