HOW DID THE LAME DUCK SESSION ALMOST TURN INTO A SWAN?

DADT repeal, 9-11 Responders Bill, START, Food safety bill - all major successes for the Democrats despite the mid-term drubbing and I have no idea how this happened.  Ezra Klein thinks it's because the saner Republicans in the Senate are worried that the incoming crop of krazies will hurt the GOP so they want to appear reasonable now before the wackos take over the party.  I don't buy that because the Party of No was successful in the mid-term election so there's no reason to fold now.

I wouldn't call a success the opportunity for gays to fight in immoral and unnecessary wars, which are the only kind the American government is capable of fighting.
