Weeks ago, I heard a caller to Bill Bennett's radio show claim that we all owed obedience to Pres. Bush because that is God's wish. I had heard this before and thanx to a commenter at MyDD, I think I've found the Bible verses that support this view in the Book of Romans, written by St. Paul over the winter of 56-57 A.D. as he was going from Corinth to Rome.
The verses are Romans 13:1-2 and here are 4 translations:
1Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
(New International Version)
1Every (A)person is to be in (B)subjection to the governing authorities For (C)there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.
2Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.
(New American Standard Bible)
1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
(King James Version)
13:1
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God.
13:2
Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.
(New Revised Standard Version)
