THE BELTWAY ELITES

A long time ago, I think the late 60s - early 70s, I wondered what gave magazine pundits the right to say "we think" and claim that they spoke for most Americans. Decades later, I recalled that thought as I watched Sam Donaldson, I think, express amazement that most Americans didn't care much about Clinton's lie even though the Beltway was all astir. I am still puzzled but the picture is getting a little clearer for me.

Atrios posted an article by Sally Quinn that describes how tribal, perhaps highschoolish, the DC media are.

Digby has a great post that takes this a little further:

“Washington has become a kind of aristocracy, with all the attendant inbred, insular, corruption that eventually befalls a ruling elite.”

Read both!
