I've been toying with that idea and I finally got around to figuring about how much it would cost. Here, in round numbers, are yesterday's market valuations of the 7 biggest U.S. oil companies:
Exxon-Mobil 390 Billion
Chevron 134 Billion
ConocoPhillips 97 Billion
Valero Energy 41 Billion
Marathon Oil 30 Billion
Amerada Hess 14 Billion
Sunoco 11 Billion
TOTAL: 717 Billion
A lot of money but considering that oil will only get more expensive, it seems to be a good long-term investment.
