As I write this, it looks like the GOP will retain Duke Cunningham's seat for the next 7 months so I'd like to get a head start on providing some context by looking at the past results. Chris Bowers provides more insight into the 50th and tells us why we should be encouraged by the results.

In 2000, Cunningham was in the 51st district and Bilbray lost his seat in the 49th district to a Democrat. Duke beat his opponent Baraza , 64% to 31%.
In 1998, Duke beat Kripke in the 51st district, 61% to 35%. In the 49th district, Bilbray beat Kehoe, 49% to 47%.
