THE COMMIE MEME

The wingnuts sure love to re-fight old battles. Every so often, I hear someone call in to a wingnut radio show and claim that the Democrats/Liberals are Communists. This claim is obviously absurd but it has a long and distinguished history in wingnut world. Today I was listening to Weekend Edition and I heard this remark about a proposal to have a Department of Peace:

The backlash started the next morning. When Vietnam veteran Jerome Kortuem read about the resolution in the newspaper, he was dumbfounded.

"I just couldn't believe it," Kortuem said. "These communists are trying to do it again."

Kortuem, who served as a Navy bomber pilot in Vietnam, worried that if Congress were to create a Department of Peace, Americans would become "a bunch of wusses," he said.

I suspect that Mr. Korteum believes that the dirty, stinking hippies lost the Vietnam War, despite massive evidence to the contrary.
