THE FOUNDERS & THE MILITARY

When they come across a legal decision they dislike, usually because their Fundie base opposes it, the wingnuts whine about the "original intent" of our Founders when they wrote the Constitution and how the decision goes against that intent. As far as I know, they never mention the intent of the Founders toward a standing military. This snippet is from George Washington's Farewell Address:
Hence likewise they will avoid the necessity of those overgrown Military establishments, which under any form of Government are inauspicious to liberty, and which are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican Liberty:

Currently, the U.S. spends about as much as the rest of the world COMBINED on defense.
