THE DOWNSIDE TO BIG PHARMA

In the Health Care Wars, the wingnuts warn us that we may hurt the ability of Big Pharma to produce miracle drugs. Here I'd like to show that BP doesn't always to the right thing.

- Also, many people still have fresh memories of the fen-phen debacle. In 1997, Wyeth (WYE, Fortune 500), formerly known as American Home Products, was forced to take this weight loss drug off the market after some patients suffered complications with their heart valves, resulting in a $3.75 billion settlement from the company, though the true liability cost was billions more. (CNN Money, 1/42008)

- Merck pulled Vioxx from the market on Sept. 30, 2004 amid evidence the blockbuster drug doubled risk of heart attack and stroke. Plaintiffs who by Nov. 8, 2007, had filed a lawsuit or a tolling agreement to suspend the statue of limitations _ a total of about 60,000 cases _ have until midnight Tuesday to get their registration forms to the claims administrator, by mail, courier or electronically.
