Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!
These lines wish for a terrible retribution on the Babylonians for destroying Jerusalem: their children should be killed by having them thrown against rocks. Wright pointed out that this desire was a dangerous one for Christians to have (see video at Carpetbagger) and tied it in to America's meddling in the Middle East. As Wright put it,
Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism.
Wright is reminding us that true Christianity promotes reconciliation, not revenge. Retribution is practically a principle among movement conservatives and as evidence I offer something Tammy Bruce said last week on her radio show: we should kill all of Bin Laden's wives and children.
