JOHN LOTT == LIAR

On the FAUX News site, wingnut John Lott has a preposterous column entitled "The 'Recession' Is a Media Myth," and its chock full of LIES and misleading truths. Here's just one:

"...during the last year of the Clinton administration when we were in a recession."

You might want to look up the numbers yourself. Take the one claim that you make:

I prefer to use the NBER. They claim the recession started in March 2001.

The point of the Washington Post article was that the NBER moved the date that the recession started back into 2000.

JL -

That's not true. This is from NBER:

Business Cycle Dating Committee, National Bureau of Economic Research
Robert Hall, Chair
Martin Feldstein, President, NBER
Ben Bernanke
Jeffrey Frankel
Robert Gordon
Victor Zarnowitz
November 26, 2001
This report is also available as a PDF file.
The NBER's Business Cycle Dating Committee has determined that a peak in business activity occurred in the U.S. economy in March 2001. A peak marks the end of an expansion and the beginning of a recession.
