McClellan called the Iraq war a "serious strategic blunder," a surprisingly harsh assessment from the man who was at that time the loyal public voice of the White House who had followed Bush to Washington from Texas.
"The Iraq war was not necessary," he concludes. "Waging an unnecessary war is a grave mistake."
Reuters:
McClellan, who had argued strenuously from the White House podium on why the war was justified, wrote that the decision to go to war in Iraq was a "fateful misstep."
"What I do know is that war should only be waged when necessary, and the Iraq war was not necessary," he said.

McClellan says Bush in effect lied about WMDs being the reason for the war, instead wishing to democratize the Mideast. Ironic then, if this analysis in on target, the US is slowly ceding Iraq to Iranian domination and a
ruling elite that has little intention of reconciling with its
rivals, instead prepared to circumvent democratic procedure to avoid doing so.
