HOW TO LOSE HEARTS & MINDS

Deny people simple justice. We have done this in many ways in the Middle East and McClatchy lets us know the results of two of our blunders.

First, the shame of Haditha:

Haditha victims' kin outraged as Marines go free

"We put our hopes in the law and in the courts and one after another they are found innocent," said Yousef Aid Ahmed, the lone surviving brother in the family. "This is an organized crime."

"Right now I feel hatred that will not fade," said Ahmed. "It grows every day." Charges against two Marines who allegedly killed his brothers were dropped in August 2007.

The legal rationales behind the dismissal of many charges against the Marines don't matter to the Iraqi families. They told the world there was a massacre, they said, and still no one listened.

"What should we do?" Abdul Razak said. "They are all found innocent. What more do they need?...They shouldn't have been found innocent."

Second, the shame of our own Gulags:

Militants found recruits among Guantanamo's wrongly detained

A McClatchy investigation found that instead of confining terrorists, Guantanamo often produced more of them by rounding up common criminals, conscripts, low-level foot soldiers and men with no allegiance to radical Islam — thus inspiring a deep hatred of the United States in them — and then housing them in cells next to radical Islamists.

Soldiers, guards or interrogators at the U.S. bases at Bagram or Kandahar in Afghanistan had abused many of the detainees, and they arrived at Guantanamo enraged at America.

"A lot of our friends are working against the Americans now, because if you torture someone without any reason, what do you expect?" Issa Khan, a Pakistani former detainee, said in an interview in Islamabad. "Many people who were in Guantanamo are now working with the Taliban."

America has no chance of winning Moslem respect and trust as l,ong as dual loyalists roam free in government. Good probe here by
Israel-skeptic Jew Phillip Weiss of one of the worst. His post today on the Lobby pushing war with Iran also cutting edge.

Other post mine-might also say Israeli advisors assisted in training and guiding American supervisors of Iraqi prisoners.
