MORE "GROWTH PAYS FOR ITSELF"

That's the mantra of the local pro-growth crowd and was quickly forgotten when they tried to get an increase in the local sales tax passed. The increase was approved but we still have a lot of transportation problems. The bus fares will most likely increase and that will most affect the bottom 40%. Now we find that miles and miles of roads are in terrible shape and need to be completely rebuilt.

About 13 percent of the major roads in and around Tucson are in such bad condition that repaving in not an option. The only real fix is to tear them out and rebuild from the ground up.

In odometer talk, that's like driving over 481 miles — roughly from Tucson to Los Angeles — on a continuous ribbon of bumps, ruts, cracks, holes and waves.
