ANOTHER GOP COVERUP

President Bush has invoked executive privilege to keep the FBI interview with Cheney on the Plame leak from Congress. Bush's Attorney General asked for the invocation, so we know that he's also in the tank for Bush. I've written about this before but there are some new facts.

Dan Froomkin at the WaPo, "Mukasey the Obstructionist," points out that there is plenty of reason to look into this:
In the closing arguments of the trial at which Libby was found guilty, Fitzgerald declared: "There is a cloud over the vice president. . . . And that cloud remains because this defendant obstructed justice."

Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball at Newsweek, "Closing the Door," found this expert opinion:
"As far as I know, this is an utterly unprecedented executive-privilege claim," said Peter Shane, an Ohio State University law professor who is an expert on executive privilege and separation-of-powers issues. "I've never heard this claim before."

The next time you hear someone say the GOP is for the rule of law, remember this shameful episode.
