BAGHDAD (AP) - Face to face with Iraq's leaders, Barack Obama gained fresh support Monday for the idea of pulling all U.S. combat forces out of the war zone by 2010. But the Iraqis stopped short of actual timetables or endorsement of Obama's pledge to withdraw American troops within 16 months if he wins the presidency.

"We are hoping that in 2010 that combat troops will withdraw from Iraq," spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said after Obama met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki—who has struggled for days to clarify Iraq's position on a possible timetable for a U.S. troop pullout.

Iraq's Sunni vice president, Tariq al-Hashemi, said after meeting Obama that Iraqi leaders share "a common interest ... to schedule the withdrawal of American troops."

"I'd be happy if we reach an agreement to say, for instance, the 31st of December 2010" would mark the departure of the last U.S. combat unit, he said—then noted that any such goal could be revised depending on threats and the pace of training for Iraqi security forces. That date would be some seven months later than Obama's 16-month timeline.

Unfortunately, the ground seems to have shifted on the terms of the debate. Originally it was argued correctly that Iraqis had less incentive for reconciling and otherwise getting their own act together e.g. training diligently as long as US troops were present.

Leaked CIA and other reports also revealed the longer we were there, the greater the chance of another jihad hit here became, as occupation helped jihad recruitment.

The Iraqi people obviously want and have wanted US troops out
longer and more quickly than the Iraqi government members-at-large
have, at any given time.

All these facts I would believe are still being argued, with the obvious goal of immediate egress, by such as Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, perhaps Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney.

I would suggest Obama has retreated here and to AIPAC, as Nader here outlines.
