UM, WHAT'S SECOND PRIZE?

Recently I've heard Hannity and Charles Murray extol the virtues of "rugged individualism" and contrast that with the filthy socialism the liberals want to inflict on America. I thought the phrase originated with Teddy Roosevelt but that's not true. These 2 clowns don't seem to know who first used the phrase: Herbert Hoover in 1928:
"We were challenged with the choice of the American system "rugged individualism" or the choice of a European system of diametrically opposed doctrines doctrines of paternalism and state socialism. The acceptance of these ideas meant the destruction of self-government through centralization of government; it meant the undermining of initiative and enterprise upon which our people have grown to unparalleled greatness."

Hoover also said this in 1928:
“We are nearer today to the ideal of the abolition of poverty and fear from the lives of men and women than ever before in any land.”
