WHY NOT PUBLICLY?

Walter Pincus spoke with "senior intelligence officials" and one of them said that Abu Zubaida and Khalid Sheik Mohammed had not been tortured in order to reveal a connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda.
That's believable but what's a little hard to grasp is why their names couldn't be revealed. Pincus gave a standard explanation - "speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the subject publicly." - but that usually just means "it's ok to leak this, just don't let them know who you are."

Why not tell us? Why keep it a secret? This certainly isn't the transparency Pres. Obama promised all of us.
