WHY NOT THE TRUTH?

Gov. Perry and Gov. Sanford both claimed that accepting Federal unemployment stimulus money would have required their states to "to permanently expand its unemployment program" and lead to higher taxes for the long haul." This is nonsense, as I noted below and had either one taken the time to find out, they would also know that.

But in a letter earlier this year to U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., Douglas Small, a deputy assistant secretary in the Department of Labor, said state legislatures would not be prohibited in the future from repealing the unemployment expansions that the stimulus dollars would have paid for. Small wrote, “If a state eventually decides to repeal or modify any of these provisions, it may do so, and it will not be required to return any incentive payments.”
