When conservatives talk about how great it was in the past, it's never quite clear how far back they mean. For some movement conservatives like Mark Levin or freak conservatives like Glenn Beck, it means going back to the 19th Century, for others like Michael Savage it seems to the the 50s. I think the Fundies want to go back to the days when the church had more more say in civil life. There were two main punishments for wrongdoing, excommunication and execution.
In Christ's churches purely reformed : a social history of Calvinism by Philip Benedict, we have some indication of the number of excommunications in Geneva in the 16th Century (p. 104):
