Deutsche Bank agreed on Tuesday to pay a $553 million fine for its involvement in fraudulent tax shelters in a settlement with the Department of Justice in which the firm admitted to criminal wrongdoing.
The fine amounted to the fees that Deutsche Bank collected from its role in the scheme, the taxes and interest the Internal Revenue Service couldn’t collect from taxpayers as the result of the misdeeds, and a civil penalty of $149 million.
