A health-care crime sweep Thursday morning netted 111 defendants on charges related to Medicare fraud, in what Attorney General Eric Holder called the largest such takedown in U.S. history.
The defendants—charged in nine metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Chicago and Miami—were allegedly involved in more than 40 schemes, almost all of which were unrelated to one another, officials said. Altogether, the schemes attempted to defraud the government of more than $225 million, according to Mr. Holder.
USA Today has more information about the perps:
* In Brooklyn, N.Y., three doctors and one physical therapist were among 10 suspects charged in alleged frauds totaling $90 million, according to court documents.
* In Miami, 32 suspects, including two doctors and eight nurses, allegedly submitted false billings totaling $55 million.
* In Detroit, 21 suspects, including three doctors and three physical therapists, allegedly submitted false claims for more than $23 million for nerve conduction tests, psychotherapy, physical therapy and podiatry.
