ECONOMIC FREEDOM AND SOCIALISM

I've noted before that the Heritage Foundation ranks Hong King and Singapore #1 and #2 in economic freedom and pointed out that for Hong Kong, this means that economic freedom does not imply political freedom.  I also pointed out that 6 of the top ten countries are modern welfare states  and that contradicts the standard conservative argument that socialism reduces economic freedom.

Thanx to Matt Yglesias, I can now add Singapore to list of welfare states that have a high economic freedom rank.  Singapore has a mandatory government run program for retirement savings called the Central Provident Fund , which is an enhanced version of our own Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid programs.
