But the lesson will remain: Pres. Obama is VERY GOOD on national security issues.
That certainly will reduce the traditional GOP advantage in these areas and can only help Obama's re-election. In addition, given how much the Baggers and their allies have whined about budget deficits, the GOP can't propose anything like a Reagan-era buildup of defense. Overall, I'd say Peter Beinart is correct.

Obama's mishandling of Egypt, Bahrain, Palestine,Gaza, Afghanistan, Pakistan-in which admittedly the GOP mainstays would have done worse, has by and large kept the US' bad reputation in the Mideast and Moslem world intact.
But the average American still leans to the belief the US is entitled to a gargantuan array of military bases while playing Pakistan and Afghanistan like a private chessboard and is entitled to enforce Israel's dispossession of Palestinians without resistance. He and she is aiding and abetting both parties in sapping the nation to support the declining Empire.

You are sadly correct and I don't know what to do about this. The only group that seem interested in getting out of the Empire business are the Libertarians and paleocons like Pat Buchanan.
