OCCUPY TUCSON FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT AGAINST CITY OF TUCSON
TUCSON, AZ — Nov. 7, 2011 — Volunteer lawyers announced today they have filed a civil rights lawsuit against the City of Tucson on behalf of those arrested at Occupy Tucson – and will ask for a temporary restraining order to stop arrests at Veinte De Agosto Park.
“The Constitution never sleeps and there is no closing time for the First Amendment. Political speech is available to all citizens no matter when you want to express yourself 24/7,” noted Guy Keenan, an attorney for Occupy Tucson. Added co-counsel Paul Gattone, “Occupy Tucson has made every effort to accommodate the City while carrying on with their protected expression to no avail. We were forced to go to the federal court in order to defend our clients’ free speech rights.” Keenan and Gattone are the lead attorneys for the Occupy Tucson Legal Working Group, which consists of volunteer lawyers and legal support staff who represent 96 occupiers on their 400-plus misdemeanor charges in Tucson City Court.
