I've just finished reading the one-volume version of Irving Brant's The Fourth President: A Life of James Madison and it's full of interesting facts, among them this tidbit about Nicholas of Cusa (1401–1464), who wrote in De Concordantia Catholica "Since all men are by nature free, government rests on the consent of the governed."
