THE GREAT MIDDLE EAST DEMOCRACY PROJECT

Under Pres. Bush, conservative gasbags thought bringing democracy to the ME was a great idea.

Back in 2005, Ann Coulter thought democracy in the Middle East was a terrific development:
COULTER: Wait a minute, we won some wars? We established democracy.

HANNITY: We're not wasting our time...

COULTER: Arab countries are voting. The foreign policy has been magnificent. Are you and Alan saying that you think the Middle East will not be a different place? It's already a better place. But how about a prediction on what it's going to look like in eight years, five years, four years?1
In 2006, Sean Hannity was also excited about bringing democracy to the ME:
HANNITY: I don't think anyone has talked specifically about a timeline. Look, I think it's always been the goal, in spite of, I think, a lot of what has been spun out there, to get these brave men and women home as quickly as possible. But with the understanding that the mission has got to be finished.

You know, look, think about it this way -- and I did ask the president about this. If you start in Iraq and you begin a democratization of the region.

And it's successful and it can spread, how far will that go towards ending this fanaticism, where people literally feel that God is obstructing them to strap bombs on their children and send them into pizza parlors and buses to kill women and children, or you know, to hijack airplanes.2
