BEFORE I FORGET

I want to strongly recommend Economic sentiments : Adam Smith, Condorcet, and the Enlightenment by Emma Rothschild.  Rothschild does a great job explaining the development of economic theory between 1750 and 1820 and draws in the related political developments.

I especially recommend chapter 5, "The Bloody and Invisible Hand" because of its thorough approach to Smith's great metaphor.
