Pueblo High student faces murder charge

A Pueblo Magnet High School student was arrested on campus Tuesday in connection with a fatal shooting of a man Sunday.

Sammy Anthony Tarrazas, 17, was taken into custody at 12:30 p.m. by homicide detectives of the Pima County Sheriff's Department after the teen tried to run away, said Deputy Tom Peine, a department spokesman. Pueblo High is at 3500 S. 12th Ave.

Tarrazas was booked into the Pima County jail on a first-degree murder charge for the slaying of Jesus Duarte, 19, Peine said.

Duarte was shot in the 6400 block of South Camino de la Tierra shortly before midnight Sunday, Peine said. He was taken to a hospital, but he died from his injuries, he said.

Detectives found out that Duarte was involved with Tarrazas' girlfriend. Tarrazas lured Duarte outside of his home, and then shot him multiple times, Peine said.

Investigators found out that people heard a man pleading for his life, and the pleas were followed by several gun shots, Peine said.

This is a sad situation for both young men. The obvious is the victim lost his life but there has been another life lost as well. Both young men will never have a chance to experience the true awesomeness that life has to offer. I pray for the family of the Jesus Duarte. I hope one day they can come to forgive, and that they can have peace in their hearts. I pray for the family of Sammy Tarrazas that they too can come to terms with what he has done and will forgive him as well. I pray that God will be merciful and loving to Sammy Tarrazas.
