Peter Baker of the NYT seems like he's been listening to conservative talk radio a bit too much.  As a result, he engages in this horrific bit of revisionism:

Mr. Bush defied broad opposition to a troop surge in Iraq, fueling a turnaround there.

Iraq is and always will be a failure that stained America's honor.
