WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain is dropping his threat to block Gen. Martin Dempsey's nomination for a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
But the Arizona Republican delivered a harsh critique Tuesday of Dempsey's assessment of potential American military action in Syria.
McCain called Dempsey's evaluation, outlined in a letter Monday to Sen. Carl Levin, "most disappointing" because the general described a scenario where it is impossible to intervene.
Dempsey wrote that establishing a no-fly zone to protect Syrian rebels would require hundreds of U.S. aircraft at a cost as much as $1 billion per month and no assurance it would change the momentum in Syria's civil war.
