ANOTHER REASON TO DO NOTHING ABOUT SYRIA

IGNORANCE!!!

Both MSNBC and the NY Times describe Assad as a Sunni when in fact he's is a member of the Alawite sect of Shiism.

Yes and in truth Alawism in its pure form believes Ali is Divine and participated in creating the world. This puts it beyond the bounds of Shiism and some of the (small in number) clergy was taken to centers of Shia education earlier in the 20th century to try and get the Alawites to abandon certain of their non-orthodox doctrines, believed to have developed due to isolation, geographically.

Not sure how much of a factor this is, because many average Alawis are apparnetly unaware of and indifferent to the secretive original doctrines.

Thanx for the info - I had heard that some Muslims think the Alawites are heretics.
