Nielsen just published a pilot study of the buying patterns of listeners of different radio formats in Dallas and  news/talk radio listeners only led in one category: money spent per capita on movies:

Dallas News/Talk listeners go to more movies every year and spend more money at the movies than all other listeners

The leading group for spending per capita was rock/alternative:

Dallas Rock/Alternative listeners spend more money on retail and make more trips to retail locations than all other listeners

This implies that advertising on news/talk isn't very effective.
