It is one of the worst losses of life for government forces in the conflict. Last week at least 14 soldiers died in a rebel attack on an army checkpoint near Donetsk, some 130km (80 miles) from Sloviansk.

It's questionable whether Putin wants a completely separate pro-Russian nation in the east or merely a Kiev government which has authority over everything but Crimea, but which government is forced to be at least moderately pro-Russian and of course not a member of either the EU or NATO.
