I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS...

According to the BBC, ISIS has between 3000 and 5000 fighters yet has been able to rout Iraqi armed forces totaling 30,000 and the Guardian reports the actual numbers involved show that the Iraqi Army isn't worth spit:
Iraqi officials told the Guardian that two divisions of Iraqi soldiers – roughly 30,000 men – simply turned and ran in the face of the assault by an insurgent force of just 800 fighters.

They were trained by the US taxpayer via the resented American military occupier and thus didn't develop much morale.
