ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

Wingut ROD DREHER turns against BushWorld and Glenn Greenwald has a fine analysis of this recent defection. Mahablog provides a little historical perspective on the wingnuts (here and here) and James Bond provides an introduction to some of the social and psychological research on wingnuts.

I have been reading F.A. Hayek because I've been looking for a rational conservative but I am again disappointed. Hayek can get just as hysterical as any of our modern American conservative idiots. Here are just two examples from his 1960 book, The Constitution of Liberty.

On Britain's national health care system (p. 300):

The manner in which state medicine has been used in Russia as an instrument of industrial discipline gives us a foretaste of the uses to which such a system can be put.

On Britain's social security system (p. 297):

And ultimately not morals but the fact that the young supply the police and the army will decide the issue: concentration camps for the aged unable to maintain themselves are likely to be the fate of an older generation whose income is entirely dependent on coercing the young.

Conservatism has been destroyed from within.
