Dave Anderson at News Hoggers has an interesting post about asymmetric warfare in Afghanistan and points out that the Soviets were defeated with a lot of help from other nations, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United States. We overthrew the Taliban in 2001 and 8 years later, they are still a force:
