ANOTHER EDITION OF "CONSERVATIVES THEN AND NOW"

In Before the Storm, Rick Perlstein reported that Barry Goldwater was willing to distance himself from Robert Welch, the krazy who founded the John Birch Society,  but he couldn't bring himself to walk away  from the Birchers because he believed there were too many good people who were members.   I guess we are supposed to believe that the members somehow ignored the krazy coming from their leader?

Anyway, decades later prominent Republican politicians fail to distance themselves from another group of krazies, the Birthers.

Actually, Welch wrote a book about Ike called "The Politician" which accused Ike of being an actual secret Red, which Welsh said he did not require his membership to believe.

I knew about Welch's accusation, I didn't know that it wasn't a required belief.
