ARIZONA HAS PLENTY OF WINGNUTS, SO I WAS SURPRISED BY THIS..

The state education commissioner has spoken out in favor of the Common Core educational standards.  Glenn Beck has been attacking these standards for months but that doesn't seem to have affected Arizona decision makers.  This bout of sanity follows the remarkable decision by the Governor and enough GOP state legislatures to expand Medicaid, so the conservative wackos don't have as much influence as I suspected.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal, appearing in Chandler on Wednesday, praised the more-rigorous Common Core standards that went into effect across the state this school year, saying that academic standards have been too low.

A driving force behind Common Core was former Intel CEO Craig Barrett, and the standards became controversial only after President Barack Obama voiced his support for them, Huppenthal said.

“Don’t be fooled by the barrage of e-mails,” he said. “These are good standards that will make students ready for college and career.”
