Jack N. Rakove,
Original Meanings: Politics and Ideas in the Making of the Constitution.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1996.
This book won the 1997 Pultizer Prize for History and I found a couple of online reviews here and here.
I am only about 1/3rd of the way through but I can say that Rakove does a remarkable job showing how much political compromise was involved in both framing and ratifying the Constitution.,
